JASON BROWN WINS JUNIOR MEN AT NATIONALS
Our very own Jason Brown won the gold medal in the Junior Men competition at USFS Nationals on Jan. 17 in Spokane, WA. Jason placed second in the short program Friday morning with 62.10 points, then scored 133.12 in the Free Skate Sunday evening. His total of 195.22 put him in first place by 0.19 of a point.

Skokie Valley is proud of all of our Regional, Sectional, and Nationals Competitors. We understand the number of hours and dedication that every competitor puts in to training for these events.

Test sessions continue into spring
Dance forms should be sent to Heide Schiller, administrator for dance tests, at:
733 Juniper Rd., Glenview, Il 60025.

Judith O'Shea at (847-855-1942) will continue to handle questions about moves and free-style tests.

As usual, cancellations must be made within 7 days of the test session or fees will not be returned. The schedule for each test will be posted online about a week before the test session. Again, please note THE APPLICATION DEADLINES ARE FIRM.

U.S. FIGURE SKATING ANNOUNCES HELEN M. MCLORAINE FIGURE SKATING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Dec. 17, 2009) – U.S. Figure Skating and the Pioneer Fund announced today the establishment of the Helen M. McLoraine Figure Skating Scholarship Program to assist eligible current and former amateur and professional figure skaters who which to pursue a college education. Scholarships are offered each year for full-time undergraduate study at an accredited institution of the student’s choice.

The Pioneer Fund is a private family foundation, established in the 1960s by the late Helen M. McLoraine. Influenced by her mother’s dedication to philanthropy, McLoraine became a generous benefactor to others with a focus on figure skating, higher education assistance and medical research. McLoraine’s most cherished pastime was the sport of figure skating, and she attended many competitions, events and skating shows throughout the world each year.

The scholarship program is administered by Scholarship Management Services, a division of Scholarship America. As many as 10 scholarships will be awarded, ranging from $3,000-$7,000 per scholarship recipient. Scholarship applications must be postmarked by Feb. 18, 2010.

Membership Application Form is posted for 2009-2010 skating season
A REVISED membership application form for the 2009-2010 skating season is now available on this Web site. Skaters who plan to test this summer should be aware that they need to renew their membership which EXPIRED JULY 1.

You may download the form, fill it out, and submit if for the new year. Junior, family, and all other membership types are covered by the one new form.

Judges are available for critiques
Skokie Valley judges are now available to give critiques of new programs for freestyle or dance, as well as for moves and competition. Critiques must be requested by the skater's coach, and each should be scheduled two to three weeks in advance. Judges listings are available here.
