Skokie Valley SC competitor Jason Brown skated to second-place finishes in both short and long programs in the Junior Grand Prix Final in Quebec City, Canada, this weekend. The total of his two scores, however, gave him the gold medal over silver medalist Han Yan of China and teammate Joshua Farris.

Brown set personal best scores for both skates in international competition where he is in his second season on the JGP circuit.

Kori Ade named PSA Developmental Coach of the Year
The Professional Skaters Association (PSA) announced its annual award winners at the 2011 PSA International Conference and Trade Show May 31 in Dallas.

The Coach(es) of the Year Award went to Marina Zoueva and Igor Shpilband, while Kori Ade was named Developmental Coach of the Year. Zoueva and Shpilband were double winners, as they also took home the Paul McGrath Choreographer of the Year Award. The recipient of the Pieter Kollen Sport Science Coaching Award was Christy Krall.

Ade coaches men's competitors Jason Brown and Jordan Moeller in the Chicago area. Brown won the silver medal at the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series event in Courchevel, France, placed ninth in his senior debut at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships (including a seventh-place finish in the free skate) and took seventh at the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships. Moeller captured the novice silver medal in Greensboro.

Zoueva and Shpilband pulled off several impressive feats in the 2010-11 season. The teams that occupied the top three steps on the senior ice dancing podium at the 2011 AT&T U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Greensboro, N.C.--Meryl Davis & Charlie White, Maia Shibutani & Alex Shibutani and Madison Chock & Greg Zuerlein--all are coached by Zoueva and Shpilband in Canton, Mich. They one-upped themselves a few months later with another clean sweep, this one at the 2011 World Figure Skating Championships, where Davis and White, Canada's Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir and the Shibutanis finished first, second and third, respectively.

From left are Scott Hamilton, winner of the Gustave Lussi Award presented to a male professional skater or coach who has brought recognition to the sport in a positive and favorable manner; Igor Shpilband, three-time winner of coach-of-the-year honors; and Kori Ade of the Skokie Valley Skating Club named Developmental Coach of the Year.
